Continuing down that road of photojournalist ethics, I’d mention something that has been bugging the hell out of me lately. It’s raising awareness of certain charities, and good work being done globally and if photography can help the cause. For instance I had this idea of going down to places that need help and volunteers, for example an aid hospital in Somalia or Sudan. Does photography ethics help in this situation?
Can I photograph and be a torch carrier for a cause, and continue to do this throughout my life for everything I photograph. Do I help change at all if I just photograph and publish the images rather than get involved? Do you think I could do more if I actively raised awareness, march to Parliament, show my work in a thousand galleries, spawn more charities from it…does any of this help? It’s confusing but I’m sure there is an answer.
My own raising of awareness took me to Belgium where I photographed a demonstration on Pro-Belgium, which is against the country being split into French and Flemish regions. The Belgium flags and bands and people were out in force on the streets for Brussels for a full day in good spirits.
